About the game
Shield Your Vote is an augmented reality (AR) game experience designed and built as a companion to CCIJ’s Democracy Deferred series. The series includes investigative stories that raise pointed questions about the legitimacy of the 2023 Nigerian presidential election as well as the current status and future trajectory of democracy in Africa’s most populous nation.
The AR game immerses players in scenarios where they must protect votes from threats such as fake news, cyberattacks, and voter suppression. Currently, only one hotspot is playable, located in Lagos. Players shield votes from waves of voxelized social media posts (derived from reportage), fireballs spreading green smoke (representing false information), and other visual elements like fire and social media icons (likes, loves, and shares).
